Here are the latest snow reports for the Haines Area. If you have just returned from the skiing, snowmobiling, snowboarding, sledding, snowshoeing, etc. please tell everyone what you observed.

Sluff frequently occurred. Heavy snow over weekend was not consolidating on Saturday and anything 25 degrees or higher was sluffing and in some areas slabbing out.

Variable conditions with crust thickening or developing on the lower south facing hillsides where the sun has melted the top layer and then frozen overnight. There is still 6-16\" of fresh powder on the north facing or wind protected slopes. After digging a pit there are two layers of weakness, one about 22 inches down and another about 40 inches down. The latter is a result of the melt/freeze action from early in the season, creating a layer of large, crystalized hoar that could fail as the weather warms. After heavy top pressure and then downhill pressure applied from the back of the block only the bottom layer failed. Overall the avalanche danger on the hill we tested and skied/boarded was very low.
